(RepublicanInformer.com)- The Department of Justice has been conducting an investigation into Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani for some time now, but they stepped up those efforts considerably this week.
On Wednesday, the FBI executed a search warrant on the office and Manhattan home of Giuliani. It’s all part of a probe the DOJ is conducting into Giuliani’s dealings with people in Ukraine while Trump was in the White House.
Giuliani wasn’t the only target of the raids, either. They executed a search warrant on Victoria Toensing, another lawyer who is close to both Trump and Giuliani and who dealt with Ukrainians. While the FBI didn’t search Toensing’s home, they did confiscate her cellphone.
Officials say that Toensing herself is not a target of the probe, but that she could have information related to the case on her cellphone.
Following the raids, Robert Costello, an attorney for Giuliani, issued a statement that said agents were focused on an incident in which they say his client failed to register as a foreign agent. He said that Giuliani offered twice to discuss these allegations with the prosecutors, but they wouldn’t disclose a specific focus.
In the statement, he said:
“The electronics taken … are replete with material covered by the attorney-client privilege and other constitutional privileges. Mr. Giuliani respects the law and he can demonstrate that his conduct as a lawyer and a citizen was absolutely legal and ethical.”
On Thursday, Trump denounced the FBI raids, saying his close confidant is a victim of the DOJ, which is politically-biased under President Joe Biden.
Trump said on Fox Business with Maria Bartiromo:
“Rudy Giuliani is a great patriot. He does these things — he just loves this country, and they raid his apartment. It’s so unfair and such a double — it’s like a double standard like I don’t think anybody’s ever seen before.
“I don’t know what they’re looking for, what they’re doing. They say it had to do with filings of various papers, lobbying filings. It’s a very, very unfair situation.
“You have to understand Rudy. Rudy loves this country so much. It is so terrible when you see things that are going on in our country, with the corruption and the problems. And then they go after Rudy Giuliani. It’s very sad, actually.”
At the center of the investigations into Giuliani is his role in pressuring Ukrainian officials to initiate investigations of their own into wrongdoing by Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Those accusations ultimately led to Trump being impeached the first time.
It’s been a strong-armed attempt by the left for years now to try to take down Trump and those who align themselves with the former president.
Other former officials said they were concerned about the search warrants. The former police commissioner of New York City, Bernie Kerik, said:
“I find it extremely concerning that the mayor has been attempting to cooperate through his attorney, Mr. Costello, for almost two years and they ignored those attempts, only to show up today to execute a search warrant for materials, and all they had to do was ask for it, which raises the question as to why the search warrant was executed. Why did they send seven people to his house?”
