Over the last several years, the political, social, and cultural environment in the United States has grown increasingly polarized, divisive and toxic. Indeed, following the 2016 election in which the former reality TV star and real estate business mogul from New York City Donald Trump achieved victory and became the 45th president of the United States the political climate has soured considerably. As national media outlets spread overwhelmingly negative news coverage surrounding the president, celebrities and other public figures such as athletes, reality TV stars and music artists joined in the fray.
At times, it has appeared that the entire American entertainment industry – including Hollywood and the majority of music artists and producers have united in vocal opposition against Donald Trump and his political allies. Even after Trump lost the 2020 election, the extremely negative views espoused by these people have continued to be projected. Recently, the music artist Cher made headlines after claiming that she would leave America for good if Trump managed to win the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Cher claimed that she was at risk of forming a stomach ulcer when Trump won the presidency in 2016. Cher is a staunch progressive Democrat, and openly supported Joe Biden in 2020, even writing a song for his campaign titled “Happiness is just a thing called Joe”.
Truthfully, when a popular artist who has made their vast fortune and livelihood solely off of the unrivaled opportunities the United States provides to individuals in the industry threatens to leave the country if a political election does not go the way they would like, it should raise concerns. Patriotism is support of the country and the nation itself, through thick and thin, even if an individual does not agree with the political trajectory or governing decisions of the country. Cher is not the first celebrity to threaten to leave America; many celebrities, including Snoop Dogg, had previously made the threat.
