Billy McFarland, the man behind the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival disaster, is once again attempting to launch a luxury festival, this time with ticket prices reaching more than $1 million. McFarland, who was released from prison in 2022 after serving time for financial crimes related to Fyre Festival, announced that “Fyre II” would take place on a private island off Mexico from April 25 to 28, 2024.
In 2017, thousands of festival-goers were left stranded in the Bahamas with no running water, minimal food, and emergency tents instead of the luxury accommodations they had been promised. The chaotic event became a global scandal, leading to multiple lawsuits, McFarland’s imprisonment, and documentaries on the disaster.
Despite widespread skepticism, McFarland insists that this new festival will be a success. Early ticket sales reportedly include packages as high as $1 million, which promise luxury yachts, scuba diving, and island hopping, though no musical acts have been confirmed yet.
Concerns remain high, as many question McFarland’s ability to deliver on his promises after the colossal failure of the original Fyre Festival. Andy King, a former Fyre Festival investor and key figure in Netflix’s documentary Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, has expressed doubt about McFarland’s reform, noting numerous “red flags” about the upcoming event. King, who famously revealed he was prepared to perform a sex act to secure bottled water for the festival in 2017, is unsure if McFarland has learned from his mistakes. He admitted McFarland has “a lot of charisma” but warned against him “running the show” for Fyre II.
Despite these concerns, McFarland seems determined to push forward, claiming this event will “make up” for the previous failure. However, with no lineup and lofty promises of VIP treatment reminiscent of the first disaster, many remain skeptical about whether the new Fyre Festival can avoid becoming another fiasco.
