FBI Issues Critical Spring Break Warning Following Student Disappearance
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Los Angeles office has released a sobering travel advisory for Americans planning spring break trips abroad. The warning comes after University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki disappeared during an early morning swim in rough waters in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
FBI Assistant Director in Charge Akil Davis emphasized the importance of vigilance during travel season. “Whether it’s families looking to escape the final throes of winter or a college student seeking a brief respite from the rigors of academic life, know that the risks are there,” Davis said.
The advisory covers the spring break travel season spanning March and April, with airlines expecting a 5% increase in travelers this year. Students and families alike are being urged to take extra precautions whether traveling domestically or internationally.

Popular Spring Break Destinations Under Warning
Many favorite spring break locations currently have active State Department travel advisories. The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Spain top the list of popular destinations, with several carrying official warnings.
Jamaica currently has a Level 3 advisory (“reconsider travel”), while Turks and Caicos, Spain, Belize, and the Bahamas all have Level 2 warnings (“exercise increased caution”). The FBI noted, “The travel advisory system was designed to give US citizens timely, clear, and reliable information regarding security threats overseas.”
Safety concerns range from violent crime to terrorism threats depending on the destination. Carbon monoxide poisoning has also emerged as a potential danger at some international resorts where detection equipment may not be as common.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. Travelers staying in accommodations without carbon monoxide detectors are advised to bring portable ones from home.
Critical Safety Measures for Travelers
The FBI has also provided specific guidance for Americans traveling during spring break, noting that establishing emergency contact points for family members should be a top priority before departing.
“Be conscious of your surroundings and avoid areas you believe may put your personal safety at risk,” the agency warned. This includes staying vigilant about suspicious individuals who might be following you or asking probing personal questions.
Using only authorized taxis or shuttles is emphasized to prevent robbery or kidnapping situations. The FBI specifically warned against accepting transportation from strangers or using unmarked services.
Travelers are also advised to avoid illegal activities that could lead to blackmail or other dangerous situations. Maintaining situational awareness and traveling in groups, especially at night, significantly reduces risk.
If your family members are planning a trip, make sure they know what to expect – and how to prepare!
