Is Elon Working Tesla Staff Too Hard?

Elon Musk is known for working hard, and for expecting his team to work hard, too. And for some members of his team, it’s just gotten too much.

As Musk prepares to announce the new Tesla RoboTaxi, employees are speaking oout about how “tired” they are.

At a glance:

  • Four top executives have recently departed Tesla, including the Chief Information Officer and heads of key programs, amid dissatisfaction with Elon Musk’s management.
  • The departures come as Tesla prepares to unveil its highly anticipated “RoboTaxi” and as the company faces challenges with its Cybertruck product, including recalls and negative reviews.
  • Some insiders cite Musk’s distraction with Twitter (now X) and his involvement in politics, including support for Donald Trump, as factors contributing to the company’s internal turbulence.

Tesla is facing a leadership shake-up as four top executives have quit the company in less than 10 days, raising concerns about Elon Musk’s attention and vision for the electric vehicle (EV) giant. Among the executives who have left are Daniel Ho, head of vehicle programs, and Nagesh Saldi, Chief Information Officer. This leadership exodus follows a period of uncertainty within the company, with nearly a third of Musk’s direct reports departing since April.

The departures come at a critical time for Tesla, as the company prepares to launch its “RoboTaxi” on Thursday—a fully autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. At the same time, Tesla is dealing with challenges related to its Cybertruck, which has faced safety concerns and a recent recall of over 27,000 vehicles due to malfunctioning rear cameras.

Many insiders have pointed to Musk’s shifting focus away from Tesla, particularly following his acquisition of Twitter (now X) and his political involvement, including support for Donald Trump, as reasons for internal frustration. One source told Business Insider that senior staff feel “tired of all the noise,” while others expressed concerns about Musk’s “hardcore” management style and frequent layoffs.

Tesla’s stock has also struggled, falling by more than a third since its peak in 2021. With the RoboTaxi launch just days away, hopes are high for a breakthrough, but challenges remain, both within the company and with regulatory approval for full autonomous vehicles.

Maybe when the election is over Elon can go back to the business side of things and make sure his team is happy…
