(RepublicanInformer.com)- Madeleine Albright, the controversial first female United States Secretary of State, died last week at the age of 84.
Albright, who despite her controversial opinions and actions while in office is one of the most recognizable names in politics, had reportedly struggled with cancer and was surrounded by her friends and family as she passed away last week.
“We are heartbroken to announce that Dr. Madeleine K. Albright, the 64th U.S. Secretary of State and the first woman to hold that position, passed away earlier today. The cause was cancer,” Albright’s family said in a Twitter statement.
“We have lost a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.”
Albright was born in Prague and moved to the United States in 1948 as a refugee. She spent years in politics, rising the ranks until eventually making history by becoming the first-ever female secretary of state. She then received the Presidential Medial of Freedom in 2012 from President Barack Obama.
The family said that she was a “tireless champion” of democracy and human rights, and as she died, she was still a professor at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, as well as the chairwoman of the Albright Stonebridge Group.
