(RepublicanInformer)- Nancy Pelosi is concerned about the security of the members of the House of Representatives.
However, the Speaker said members of the House could pay for additional security they desired through their own congressional allowances. She further said the Lower Chamber would most likely have to pass more funding to protect the safety of its members because “the enemy is within the House of Representatives.”
On Thursday, Pelosi made this odd comment:
“It shouldn’t be that not only is the president of the United States inciting an insurrection, but keeps fanning the flame endangering the security of members of Congress, to the point that they’re even concerned about members in the House of Representatives being a danger to them.”
Pelosi was asked what she meant by her statement, “the enemy is within.” Her response:
“It means that we have members of Congress who want to bring guns on the floor and have threatened violence on other members of Congress.”
What Pelosi is likely referring to is the stated desire by Republican Representatives Lauren Boebert from Colorado and Andy Harris from Maryland to bring guns with them onto the floor of the House chamber. Guns are prohibited on the House floor.
After the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building, Pelosi ordered that magnetometers be installed outside the House chamber. The Speaker also said she’d issue “thousands of dollars” in fines to any member who refused to be screened for a weapon.
As for the Republican members who threatened other Congress members, Pelosi is likely referring to Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia. In 2019, she published a speech on Facebook that said the Speaker “is guilty of treason … a crime punishable by death.”
Pelosi directly addressed Greene in her Thursday press conference. She criticized the decision by Republican leadership in the House, which gave Greene a seat on the Education and Labor Committee. The Speaker referred to Greene’s statements in the past that school shootings were “false-flag” operations.
Pelosi said:
“What could they be thinking — or is thinking too generous a word about what they might be doing? It’s absolutely appalling.”
Pelosi made these comments about security after more than 30 House members sent a letter to leadership requesting they be allowed to use congressional allowances to up security in their home districts. They want to hire security personnel or even local law enforcement in their home districts, according to the letter.
The letter, which was obtained by CBS News, said:
“Protecting Members in their District is much harder because local law enforcement agencies are stretched and limited, and often don’t have sufficient staffing or money to provide regular protection to Members.
“Except for Leadership, Members do not have security details protecting them. The structure of the Capitol Police and the laws against threatening Members of Congress were first crafted in a much different time when the threat environment was significantly lower.
“Today, with the expansion of the web and social media sites, so much information about Members is accessible in the public sphere, making them easier targets, including home addresses, photos, personal details about Members’ families and real-time information on Member attendance at events.”
