Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has spoken out about the bullying she endured as a child. The 53-year-old Australian described her experiences during an interview for a new documentary series, In Vogue: The 90s. The show looks at the fashion world during the 1990s and its effect on body image and self-esteem. The actress described her teenage years and said that because she had red hair, pale skin, and was taller than most girls, she “would get teased, and it wasn’t kind.”
Later in life, however, Kidman’s height and unusual look would help catapult her to global fame. She said she had always wanted to be shorter and have a “curvaceous” body, but “suddenly, being 5 feet 11 inches and completely sort of skinny and flat chested” was in high demand in the fashion and modeling world.
Kidman’s early foray into fame was in modeling, but this was short-lived as she successfully pursued her acting dream. Having won some roles in Australian TV, Ms. Kidman hit the big time in 1989 when she starred in the thriller Dead Calm. Global fame followed when she starred opposite Tom Cruise a year later in Days of Thunder and then married the Hollywood giant.
For over a decade, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were one of the world’s most glamorous couples. The pair met while filming Days of Thunder and subsequently worked together on the movies Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut. The couple spoke out about their struggles to conceive a child and their decision to adopt. Eleven years into their marriage, Cruise filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Kidman confessed she was shocked by the end of her marriage, but later images of her leaving her attorney’s office and celebrating her new single status went viral online.
Speaking to a magazine journalist five years later, Kidman said, “To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge.” She added that the actor was very kind to her and that she loved him dearly. “I still love him,” she added.
Ms. Kidman married country music star Keith Urban in 2006. They are still together.
