Those in the President’s inner circle are reportedly furious that the pressure campaign to push Biden out of the race is gaining traction. The news comes as Biden is isolating after a positive COVID-19 test.
According to a post from CBS News’s Robert Costa on the social media platform, anger is building among major donors and there is talk about the funding drying up, due to what the donors perceive as diminishing support from former President Obama and towards Democrat leaders who are seen as hiding behind sloganeering and statements. But, according to Costa’s source, the President and his team are resolute. If the donors want Biden gone, they’re going to have to push hard for it.
According to Costa, Biden has talked about feeling “disrespected,” but nobody in his inner circle has yet hit upon an effective plan to soothe the nerves of Democrats who are drifting away from Biden. As the days pass, more and more Democrats, Costa says, are wanting Biden to break.
The calls aren’t just going on behind the scenes. Multiple Congressional Democrats have come forward over the last few weeks, calling on Biden to step down from the race on health grounds. There is now speculation that Biden’s Covid diagnosis may give him the opportunity to slow down and reflect during his enforced self-isolation. Some Democrat politicians in the House and in the Senate report sensing a shift in Biden’s demeanor and are speculating that Biden is beginning to accept the thought that he is unlikely to remain the headliner on the Democrats’ Presidential ticket this year.
Barring positive action from Biden to withdraw, the final showdown in the matter will come at the Democratic National Convention this August, where the party’s system of superdelegates may decide to opt for a brokered convention so that they can select a different nominee than the one demanded by the party’s primaries. Should that happen, the question of who can legally receive the Biden campaign’s war chest remains.
Time will tell.
