Political shockwaves spread through the United States after the 46th President of the United States Joe Biden announced his intention to drop out of the presidential race. Biden decided this on Sunday, July 21st while at his home in Delaware surrounded by friends and family. Biden has faced significant political pressure following his disastrous debate performance on June 27th against the Republican nominee and former 45th president Donald Trump. Biden was initially adamant about remaining in the race but faced growing calls for his removal from the race and succumbed to the pressure. Biden immediately endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris as a potential replacement. Harris stated she intends to earn the party nomination and in the 24 hours that have passed since Biden’s announcement, groups aligned with Harris raised $50 million for her candidacy. Harris has been endorsed by several prominent Democrats besides the president, including Hillary Clinton, Josh Shapiro, Gavin Newsom, and Phil Murphy.
Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania railed against “party powerbrokers” for pushing Biden out. Fetterman claimed it was disgusting that Democratic leaders were more adamant about Biden stepping aside than they are about the disgraced, corrupted Senator from New Jersey Bob Menendez remaining in office despite ongoing legal battles. John Fetterman has been one of Bidens most ardent defenders since the debate debacle; Fetterman himself was subject to severe criticism while running for the Senate in 2022. Fetterman often appeared incoherent and flustered while recovering from a stroke at that time, and can relate to the negative political pressure.
Jasmine Crockett, a black female lawyer and federal congressional representative from Texas made an emotionally charged post on social media slamming those who pushed Biden out. Crockett claimed Biden was the most “consequential” leader of her lifetime, and even used the phrase “MF” in the post, showing highly unprofessional vulgarity in her statement as the initials are abbreviations for swear words.
