Petition Demanding Thomas, Alito Impeachment Gets Thousands of Signatures

A Christian online petition that is demanding conservative Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas be impeached has already garnered the signatures of thousands of supporters.

Progressive New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has already introduced articles of impeachment against both justices, but the move is very likely to fail, given the fact that Republicans control the House.

Faithful America, which is a Christian organization that opposes “Christian nationalism” and supports social justice, posted the petition on its website late last week. It urges members of Congress to co-sponsor AOC’s impeachment articles.

The petition already has gained more than 7,400 signatures, the group said. It’s posted in the form of a letter to the signatory’s representative in the House of Representatives.

As the petition reads:

“As a member of the Christian organization Faithful America, I am deeply concerned by the corruption crisis on the U.S. Supreme Court, particularly the unreported gifts from Christian-nationalist activists and the refusal of justices connected to support of January 6 to recuse themselves from related cases.

“I urge you to co-sponsor newly introduced articles of impeachment against Justices Clarence Thomas and Sam Alito, so that we can begin to restore integrity to the high court and usher in a time when justice for all truly does prevail in our nation.”

The impeachment articles that were introduced against Thomas cover a bunch of different alleged behaviors. This includes accepting gifts from Harlan Crow, one of his billionaire friends and a major GOP donor, and also not recusing himself from some cases before the high court in which his wife Virginia “had an interest.”

In a prior statement, Thomas has defended himself by arguing that the gifts he received from Crow were “not reportable” and that he always sought “guidance” before he accepted any gifts. He added that he “always sought to comply with the disclosure guidelines.”

Virginia “Ginni” Thomas reached out to Mark Meadows, the former chief of staff for former President Donald Trump, after the 2020 presidential election loss, telling him to encourage his then-boss to not concede the election to President-elect Joe Biden.

Those messages were obtained by the now-defunct House select committee that investigated the Capitol riot that happened on January 6 of 2021.

Ginni told that committee that her husband “was completely unaware” of the text message exchange she had with Meadows “until this Committee leaked them to the press.”

The justice then responded to that situation in May when he was attending an Alabama judicial conference. At that conference, Thomas said:

“My wife and I, the last two or three years, just the nastiness and the lies. There’s certainly been a lot of negativity in our lives, my wife and I, over the last few years, but we choose not to focus on it.”

The impeachment articles against Alito are in reference to a luxury trip he received from a wealthy donor without disclosing it.

He also refused to recuse himself from January 6-related cases, even after being involved in a controversial in which his wife apparently flew flags in support of Trump and overturning the 2020 election at their homes in Virginia and New Jersey.
