There were many jokes about Ingrid Andress’s performance of the national anthem and her subsequent admission to rehab, but one of them didn’t quite hit a home run with some people.
Andress, 32, mangled the anthem, going sharp and flat, losing the melody, and sometimes screeching in a voice reminiscent of a horror movie. Her excuse was that she was “drunk” during her shot at singing at the MLB Home Run Derby. Andress said she would check herself into a treatment center.
She butchered the rendition in front of millions who tuned in to the event Monday night in Arlington, Texas. The video went viral on social media, and many viewers agreed that it was one of the poorest efforts at singing the National Anthem ever.
This is where Howie Rose, the longtime NY Mets radio announcer, stepped on a rake.
On his social media account, Rose said he couldn’t imagine what the people who failed the audition to sing the anthem sounded like.
That’s not the offensive part. Many sensitive types didn’t like that comment, but that is when Rose doubled down.
After people booed him and informed him that the singer was drunk and would check into rehab, Rose said his ears would say hello to her because they just checked into rehab, too.
After much backlash, Rose said he could have missed the mark, adding that they can’t all be “gems.”
Time will tell if he is “canceled.” Certainly, many are making that effort.
Andress is a country music “almost” star. Not a household name for the right reasons, her biggest hit song, “More Hearts Than Mine,” barely made it into the top 30 on the Billboard charts in 2019.
She grew up in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and is connected to baseball. Her dad, Brad Andress, was a coach for the Colorado Rockies.
