Rumors have surfaced online that Meghan Markle will endorse Kamala Harris for President. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said he believes the move is imminent and that it will add fuel to speculation that Markle intends to enter politics in the future. Reporters have therefore begun looking into whether Vice President Harris has ever interacted with Markle and found that she has done so twice on Twitter.
On the first occasion, in October 2019, Harris retweeted a video featuring Markle speaking to a journalist in South Africa. The now-famous clip shows the Duchess of Sussex thanking the reporter for asking her how she was, stating, “Not many people have asked if I’m ok.” Harris reposted the clip under a caption reading, “This is incredibly important. We must remember that it’s a sign of strength to show emotion.” She added, “Meghan, we are with you.”
The second instance was far more politically contentious and surrounded the Black Lives Matter protests and riots that raged across America and the Western world in the summer of 2020. Meghan Markle posted a video online in which she stated that she was hesitant to comment on the riots and demonstrations because she was fearful that her words would be picked apart and overanalyzed. She concluded, however, that “I realized the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing.”
Kamala Harris, then Vice President, again retweeted Markle and thanked her for her “powerful statement.”
Meanwhile, a public relations expert has remarked that Meghan should not endorse the Vice President as it would negatively impact both women. Edward Coram James, chief executive of digital marketing agency Go Up, said he believes such an endorsement would not benefit the Vice President because the people who admire Markle “will probably already like and be voting for Kamala Harris.” He added that Markle’s influence is limited mainly to young progressive-leaning voters, who will vote for Harris in large numbers.
Mr. James told reporters that, in his view, Kamala Harris will win the presidential election unless she made a “major misstep” between now and November. He argued that Markle can only make a negative contribution to Harris’s campaign because while she has fans, she is also widely disliked. “Endorsing Kamala will have a bigger effect on dissuading people who dislike Meghan than persuading people who like Meghan,” he said.
While Vice President Harris may think fondly of the Duchess of Sussex, the other side of the political aisle does not share that view. Donald Trump, for instance, has threatened to deport Prince Harry over if he lied on his visa application to live in the United States, given the Prince’s admission that he has previously used illegal drugs.
The former President’s son, Eric Trump, told journalists at the British conservative network GB News that the UK can “gladly” take the Royal couple back. Trump described Harry and Meghan as “bad apples” and “an embarrassment” who are no longer welcome in the United States.
