Taylor Swift Announces Her Support for Harris-Walz Via Instagram Post

Superstar Taylor Swift has formally endorsed Kamala Harris for US President. The singer released her view on social media immediately after the former President and the Vice President went head-to-head in their first debate in Philadelphia. In an Instagram post, Swift said she felt obliged to clarify her position after learning that former President Trump had posted artificial intelligence-generated images of her fans—known as Swifties—apparently endorsing him.

Pennsylvania native Swift described Harris as a “steady-handed” and “gifted” leader who will lead with calm rather than chaos. She confirmed she would vote for Harris in November and urged her millions of devoted fans to research the topics and candidates and see who best represents the issues they care about. The singer signed off with “Childless Cat Lady” and posted a picture of herself holding her cat to accompany the post.

The cat lady remark refers to notorious comments by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, in 2021, when he said the Democratic Party is led by people with no children and, therefore, no stake in America’s future. He specifically mentioned the Vice President, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Vance called Harris childless even though she has stepchildren. Pete Buttigieg has since adopted two.

Vance’s remarks prompted outrage from some women, with many connecting it to what they see as an extreme anti-abortion stance on the Republican ticket. During the Presidential debate, Vice President Harris said that Trump intends to enact a nationwide abortion ban and that, by contrast, she will call for legislation to ensure abortion rights in all fifty states.

Taylor Swift has previously spoken about the contentious issue. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, Swift condemned the decision on social media, saying she was “absolutely terrified” by the rollback of women’s rights in the United States. In a 2018 interview, the singer said she felt an increasing need to speak out on political issues. “The Trump presidency forced me to lean in and educate myself,” she said.

Some Republicans dismissed the importance of Swift’s endorsement, including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who said he loves her songs but prefers his laws to be written by conservatives rather than artists.
