Recall Details

La Fiesta Food Products, LLC has initiated a recall for their La Fiesta brand breadcrumbs due to the presence of sesame, an allergen not declared on the product labeling. The recall affects 8-ounce packages of both unseasoned and seasoned variants that were distributed across the United States from April 2024 to late January 2025.

The company discovered the issue after it was revealed that the product contained undeclared sesame. Further investigation showed that the problem stemmed from errors in the product labeling, including the absence of allergen information in Spanish.

The presence of undeclared sesame poses a significant health risk to individuals with sesame allergies. Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” La Fiesta Foods said.

As of now, no illnesses related to this issue have been reported. However, the company and the FDA are taking this matter seriously due to the potential health hazards associated with undeclared allergens.

But make no mistake: if you are allergic, these breadcrumbs could kill you.

Affected Products

The recall specifically pertains to the following products:

1. Unseasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado) 8oz, UPC#032327000886, with lot codes: 26032, 26073, 26082, 26092, 26094, and 26,400. These were sold from April 10, 2024, to January 22, 2025.

2. Seasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado) 8oz, UPC#032327000887, with lot codes: 26094, 26123, and 6,240. These were distributed from August 29, 2024, to January 22, 2025.

Consumers can find the lot code stamped on the front of the package.

This recall highlights the importance of proper allergen labeling, especially in light of recent regulatory changes. In 2023, the FDA added sesame as the ninth major food allergen in the United States, joining the ranks of milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.

“The recall was initiated after discovering that the product contained undeclared sesame. Further investigation revealed that the issue was caused by errors on the product labeling,” La Fiesta Foods stated.

The inclusion of sesame as a major allergen was mandated by the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act of 2021. This legislation requires that sesame be clearly labeled on packaged foods, reflecting its status as a common and potentially dangerous allergen.
