Donald Trump supporters have called for Liz Cheney to be arrested and jailed for treason for her work on the January 6 investigation. Cheney chaired the committee that concluded its probe last year and found that the former President had engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to unlawfully overturn the 2020 Presidential election and had allowed his followers to attack Capitol buildings on January 6, 2021.
The Republican from Wyoming lost her state’s primary elections to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman last year. She is one of the GOP’s most vocal Trump critics and voted for his impeachment following the 2021 rioting. MAGA supporters insist that the events of the day did not amount to a violent insurrection, with many claiming that video footage confirms the peaceful nature of events. Cheney is now accused of ignoring that evidence in finding Mr. Trump responsible.
Texas Representative Ronny Jackson tweeted, “Liz Cheney & Nancy Pelosi used their corrupt J6 committee to demonize every Trump supporter in the country.” Twitter users accused Cheney and other committee members of “treason” and “manslaughter,” according to Newsweek.
In a recently released book, Cheney hit back and lashed out at new pro-Trump Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, whom she accused of lying about the authorship and content of a legal brief in support of the former President.
In her book “Bait and Switch,” Cheney wrote that Johnson pretended to have written the amicus brief when he hadn’t, and he was “playing bait and switch, assuring members that the brief made no claims about specific allegations of electoral fraud when, in fact, it was full of such claims.” She also condemned the GOP as “enablers” and “collaborators” who propped up a “dangerous” Donald Trump.
Until 2021, Cheney held the third-ranking Republican post in the House of Representatives but was ousted by a vote of GOP lawmakers when she said she would do all she could to ensure Trump was never returned to the Oval Office.
