GOP Rep Tears Into DOJ Over Hunter Biden Special Counsel

During FNC’s program “Sunday Night in America,” Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the House Oversight Committee’s chairman, expressed criticism of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s choice of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel. This appointment was made to look into alleged misdeeds by Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

The show’s host, Trey Gowdy, noted, “David Weiss, the same individual but with a different title, has been appointed special counsel. It’s been a drawn-out process to get to this point. Still, the same individual intended to allow Hunter Biden to plead guilty to two misdemeanors while diverting a felony gun charge into a diversion program.”

Gowdy asked, “So how convinced are you of his pursuit of justice at the Department of Justice, given his appointment as special counsel last Friday afternoon?”

Comer responded with solid disapproval, stating, “This is farcical. Merrick Garland’s decision merely substantiates the argument many Republicans have made that the Department of Justice has been manipulated for political ends. I have repeatedly argued against the need for a special counsel, a stance differing from many of my House colleagues. My main concern was the lack of faith that Garland would choose a credible appointee. What he did with Weiss was even worse than I had feared. Weiss not only delayed action for five years and sought a favorable plea bargain with the president’s son, but he also allowed the statute of limitations to expire.”

Comer discussed the IRS whistleblowers’ testimony before the Oversight Committee, explaining their frustration with the inability to prosecute President Biden’s son for apparent violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act and federal income tax evasion.

He said, “They were approaching a deadline, and Weiss deliberately allowed the statute of limitations to expire. Moreover, we learned from that testimony that the IRS whistleblowers were unaware of an FBI form alleging that Joe Biden and Hunter Biden were involved in a suspicious bribery attempt in Ukraine, even though Weiss was well aware of the IRS’s investigation into suspicious wire transfers from Ukraine.”

Comer concluded his thoughts: “Our trust in Weiss and Garland is completely eroded. However, this won’t halt our inquiry. We will persist in revealing the truth to the American public concerning this family.”
